While the unexpected news of Tina Turner’s passing immediately evokes thoughts of her impeccable music career, birthing such legendary anthems as “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” and “Proud Mary,” we’d be remiss to glance over her iconic style. Throughout her almost-seven-decade-long career, the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll proved her sartorial supremacy as she appeared in tons of showstopping ensembles that matched her mesmerizing performances.
Ah, the course of true love never did run smooth. Come to think of it, nor did it always neatly conclude with a Richard Curtis cookie-cutter declaration from Hugh Grant. The harsh reality is, sometimes you’re just a girl, standing in front of a boy… who ghosted you two months ago and is now stood behind you in a checkout queue with his new girlfriend. So time and time again, we turn to romance films to give us solace that when it comes to matters of the heart, things will be all right.
Out of all the trends that have emerged as of late, it’s the pretty and ultra-romantic aesthetic that I can’t seem to get off my mind. Brands like Miu Miu and 16Arlington sent a wave of pastels down their runways and have managed to capture the hearts of fashion folk everywhere—my fellow editors and I included. And retailers are paying close attention. While pastels and pretty, bright hues aren’t usually what dominate the fall market, that’s all I can spot while perusing the new-arrivals pages. As someone who usually doesn’t gravitate toward these colors, I’m pairing the look with some of my edgier pieces.
Lori Harvey demonstrated true opulence on day eight of the Cannes Film Festival. While attending the “Asteroid City” premiere on May 23, Harvey floated down the red carpet in a plunging, backless dress by Peter Dundas. “Glamour, Class , sex appeal , and velvet,” stylist Elly Karamoh, captioned photos of Harvey at the event. “The princess has arrived in Cannes , for the premiere of Asteroid City.”
That’s truly the beauty of this remake — putting its own spin on the classic. It pays homage to the original with its musical numbers and memorable supporting characters like crab Sebastian, tropical fish Flounder, and seagull Scuttle. But through its diversity, CGI reimagining of life under the sea, and a tweak to the plot that I won’t give away here, we’re transported to a more relatable, and more magical world of The Little Mermaid.
