If we’d told you a couple of years ago that knee-length skirts were going to be cool again soon, you might’ve questioned our authority. Perhaps we should’ve because here we are. This has, undoubtedly, been the year of the skirt, with maxi and miniskirts dominating our attention and the stock at practically every retailer. Now, it’s the ’90s-inspired knee skirt’s turn.
Even though it feels impossible that we could be entering the holiday season already, the time has come for the annual shopping blitz that is Cyber Weekend. For the next few days, the entire internet will be set ablaze by countless Black Friday promotions and Cyber Monday discounts on everything you can imagine, including some beloved beauty products. As you may have already noticed, there are literally hundreds of deals available, but as an editor who shops all day for a living, I can tell you that not all sales are worth your time.
According to a 2013 study on brain maturation by the Saint James School of Medicine, “it is well established that the brain undergoes a ‘rewiring’ process that is not complete until approximately 25 years of age.” The study explains that as the brain matures, myelin or white matter increases in the brain’s frontal lobes. More myelin means better neurocircuitry, allowing for a superior flow of information between brain regions. This specifically impacts things like impulse control, problem-solving and the ability to balance short-term rewards with long-term goals. “The prefrontal cortex, the rational part of our brain, is one of the last regions of the brain to reach maturation, which explains much of the behavioural immaturity so often associated with adolescents,” says psychotherapist Helen Burke-Smith, who was not involved in the study.
