Die Krankheit wurde für mich zur Abwärtsspirale, die mich immer weiter einschränkte. Je länger meine FNS unbehandelt blieb, desto mehr wurden meine Symptome für mein Gehirn zur Gewohnheit. Mit der Zeit verfestigten sich die falschen „Vorlagen“ für Reaktionen dadurch immer mehr. Das muss aber nicht bei jeder FNS so laufen: Wird die Störung nicht behandelt, variiert ihre Entwicklung von Person zu Person. Die Symptome können gleichbleibend und mild bleiben, aber auch so schwer werden, dass Betroffene irgendwann einen Rollstuhl brauchen oder ihre Wohnung nicht mehr verlassen können. In vielerlei Hinsicht war meine FNS-Diagnose eine Erleichterung. Ich wusste endlich, was mit mir los war. Gleichzeitig warf sie aber auch ganz neue Probleme auf: Weil mir eine neurologische Störung diagnostiziert worden war, hatte ich das Gefühl, sie mir nur „ausgedacht“ zu haben oder selbst dafür verantwortlich zu sein. Ich schämte mich für meine Diagnose. Wenn mein Gehirn für diese Krampfanfälle verantwortlich war, war das meine Schuld, dachte ich; ich musste sie wohl absichtlich haben. Leider fällt es vielen Patient:innen schwer, solche körperlichen Symptome als psychosomatisch zu akzeptieren.
