I often joke that one of my regrets in life is I wasn’t a teenage girl when Olivia Rodrigo first burst onto the scene in 2021 with her debut single “Drivers License.” The song became an anthem for a new generation of emotionally in-tune teen girls, and I was a little sad that I’ve definitely aged out of that particular group by a good decade and some change.
Across industries, Black women make 64% of what non-Hispanic white men are paid (according to stats from 2021) and as white women close wage gaps, Black women fall further behind. Black women’s wage gap was worse in 2022 than it was in 2021. That gap exists in Hollywood, even if there isn’t as much hard data to back it up. What we do have are the anecdotes from Black women in the industry who continually share their frustrations while it seems like gender progress is reserved for white women only. We see that truth amplified during awards season. Emma Stone just won her second Academy Award. It’s not that she doesn’t deserve the accolade. Stone was incredible in Poor Things. But as Sarah Marrs wrote for LaineyGossip about Lily Gladstone’s loss (she was up against Stone for Best Actress and would have been the first Indigenous woman winner and only third woman of color), “The concern, always, is that there simply aren’t the same opportunities for women of color as their white peers. Lupita Nyong’o’s presence at the Oscars this year reminded everyone that in a decade, she has not had another role to put her in Oscar contention,” Marrs wrote. “Meanwhile, Jennifer Lawrence bagged four nominations and one win in five years, and in the same decade Lupita was an Academy Award winner, Emma Stone got four acting nominations and two wins…. there is more to a career than an Oscar, but even WITH an Oscar, it can be hard for women of color to advance.”

When I spot the same unusual accessory on celebrities twice in the span of four days, you can bet my interest is piqued. First, I noticed Irina Shayk wearing a garter belt on the red carpet at the Oscars after-party on Sunday. Then today, I was scrolling through Getty Images looking for an intriguing celeb outfit to cover, and I came across Kristen Stewart wearing the very same thing. I don’t believe in fashion coincidences, so I have a feeling garter belts will quickly become the next big lingerie-inspired trend.
A key issue for young people is foreign policy. In the last five months, as Israel has bombed the occupied territory of Gaza, killing 30,000 people with some U.S.-funded bombs, following a Hamas attack in October 2023, polls have revealed that young people are more pro-Palestine than previous generations. “A lot of young people between the ages of 18 and 34 are completely against another Biden term, and they are also understanding that the Democratic Party is part of a larger imperialist project,” De la Cruz says. “They are realizing that colonialism and imperialism are real things; they are not things of the past like we’re often taught in schools. And it’s important to think about foreign policies as something that also impacts us domestically. It’s not something that happens far away. It impacts us here. It impacts us to spend almost a trillion dollars, if not more than a trillion dollars, in military funding because that means that we don’t have free education, that means that we don’t have access to quality free healthcare, that means that we don’t have our infrastructure updated or fixed.”
“Dressing a woman is about making her feel her best for me. I always want to give confidence in my designs,” said Peter Dundas. After an illustrious career of dressing some of the most famous women, shifting and influencing the aesthetic landscape, and leading numerous storied ateliers, it’s safe to say Dundas has accomplished that brief.
