I Tried On 20 Pairs of Straight-Leg Jeans to Find the Best-Fitting Ones

While skinny jeans will forever remain a staple in my closet and baggy jeans are the cool new kid on the block, straight-leg jeans are unquestionably the hardest-working item in my wardrobe, which begs the question—why do I only own two pairs of the rigidly good stuff? Granted, I wear these two pairs a lot, but still, as a fashion editor, this is not okay. With plenty of superb new styles on the market right now, combined with my lackadaisical approach to washing my jeans regularly (I know I’m not alone), I’d say it’s officially time to add a fresh crop of straight-leg jeans to my arsenal. read more

The Financial & Emotional Cost Of IVF Is Overwhelming

Support for Robin and Jen and other queer couples like them is particularly fraught. In July last year, the Women’s Health Strategy announced plans to remove the additional barriers restricting same-sex couples’ access to NHS-funded IVF. As things stand, same-sex couples must pay for either six or 12 rounds of artificial insemination, with at least six taking place in a clinical setting, before they can be considered for NHS IVF. This means the financial burden of all testing, sperm and storage, as well as several rounds of intrauterine insemination, falls to the couple. These changes were expected to happen in April 2023 but have yet to be implemented. And so several campaigners, including Stonewall with its #IVFforAll campaign, have increased their pressure on the government. While these restrictions mostly directly impact same-sex and queer couples who can carry, access to IVF is also restricted for other family structures, including single women and women who have a child from a previous relationship. Guidance for trans men and other queer people with wombs is unclear, though some trans men have been able to freeze their eggs at NHS-funded fertility clinics. read more

Mesh! Satin! Leather! 14 Ballet Flats That Simply Won’t Escape My Brain

I have this recurring dream where I’m twirling around the streets of Paris at twilight, wearing a tulle Dior dress and sporting a beret in the deepest shade of noir, all the while carrying a baguette (bag or bread, either would suffice) in the crook of my arm. Of course, you can’t twirl effectively in spindly stilettos, so my footwear of choice is another French-girl staple: ballet flats. Naturally, I wake to discover I’m not in Paris, that the Dior dress was merely on subconscious loan and, to my dismay, there’s not a baguette ready to be devoured. However, much like Cinderella, I do have a pair of ballet flats that help me live out my Parisian fantasy in real life. read more
