I always breathe a sigh of relief when the fashion pendulum swings away from impractical trends and toward more useful ones. That’s precisely the case when it comes to tote bags, which have seemed to overtake mini bags in popularity lately—and for that I’m grateful. Call me a hoarder but I simply can’t fit everything I need into a tiny little bag. Where am I supposed to stash my full-size hand sanitizer, stuff for my dog, sunscreen, and bevy of lip balms?
Walking into the Kate Spade New York fall 2023 presentation at the Whitney Museum of American Art and immediately laying eyes on an exuberant Haley Lu Richardson in an electric-yellow skirt suit was, to put it simply, a vibe. It set the tone for the entire event, which involved a musical performance from the Julliard School and used the Hudson River as a backdrop.
Long cemented as a failsafe footwear choice, it’s no surprise to see new styles and beloved designs alike filling the shelves of our favourite stores. But our love affair with the look started decades ago. Beginning in 1968 with Barbarella’s space-bound boots, the silhouette has had its fair share of cinematic moments, from Julia Roberts’ iconic Pretty Woman ensemble to Anne Hathaway’s legendary “Chanel boots” speech in The Devil Wears Prada. And when it comes to music, everyone from Madonna to Ariana Grande has made knee-high boots part of their aesthetic. Need we say more?

Looking back on my Instagram it looks like my very first fashion show was BCBGMAXAZRIA fall of 2014 so you do the math! This was when NYFW was held in tents at Lincoln Center. I had interned for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week the year before and worked as an usher at the BCBG show, so for me to be invited back as a seated guest I was ecstatic–one of my favorite career highlights!
