There are a lot of things French women do exceptionally well—knowing how to dress is definitely one of them. But even so, when it comes to my own personal style I have very little in common with the “french girl style” archetype. I prefer cargo pants to tapered denim, I like my sneakers eccentric and over the top as opposed to classic white styles, and I own very few striped sweaters. However, there is one thing I’ve taken to shamelessly borrow from my European counterparts: the tweed jacket. Admittedly, the French were right. Even someone like me who couldn’t be farther from prim and proper ladylike style has taken to wearing them nonstop.
You can’t beat that classic pair of leggings. Whether you wear for workouts or in your off-duty life, the silhouette will always hold strong as a staple. But as we teased a few months ago, there’s another more nontraditional legging trend that’s increasing in popularity again amongst the fashion crowd. Yep, bootcut leggings—or “jazz pants”—are here as a coveted next-level legging trend.
Amid the cost of living crisis, it seems impossible for anybody over a size 16 to ‘budget dress’ unless they’re buying fast fashion, which is sometimes the only option for plus-size shoppers. Vintage or secondhand clothing – by far the more ethical choice – can be incredibly hard to come by for plus-size shoppers concerned about their impact on the planet. Kirsten* tells Refinery29 that she accrued debt while shopping at one of the few plus-size retailers that offered her size range but whose pieces weren’t long-lasting. “It is difficult to clear [the debt] as I buy a few bits at the start of every season so I’m stuck in a cycle,” she says. She recently went from a UK 24 to a UK 18 but finds it just as hard to buy clothing from more affordable shopping destinations despite being a smaller plus-size woman. “I feel like if you’re above a size 16, you’re penalised for it.”
There’s about a month left until Valentine’s Day, and whether you’re still dropping hints to your significant other, trying to find a more tolerable word for your “Galentine’s” celebration with friends, or—my favorite—only planning on buying a gift for your day one, aka yourself, the time to add to cart and proceed to checkout is imminent. Luckily, this is where I come in and things start getting easy.
